The Pillars of Ashley House

Our Values

Our Focus on Crucial Conversations

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Our values, professionalism, integrity, teamwork, compassion and holistic care, are tied to everything we do from developing performance improvement plans to recognizing outstanding performance. They set the tone for how we approach our work and how we hold ourselves in the work environment. Crucial Conversations has taught us the importance of addressing issues, so they do not get in the way of positive relationships and a healthy culture. We are instructed to find common ground, assume positive intent, resist the creation of stories when we don’t know fact, and to create a safe space for giving and receiving feedback. . Our DEI effort are about understanding and respect and accepting that we come from many backgrounds and experiences and that we all have a contribution to make to the conversation. Research has shown that diverse groups make the best decisions and are more innovative. In healthcare a diverse care team provides better care for a diverse clientele, and Ashley House serves a very diverse client population.

Mission

Ashley House provides comprehensive, cost effective, quality care to medically fragile children, teens and young adults in home-like settings. We are dedicated to providing education to families and care givers, building support systems, coordinating services and nurturing the development of each individual.

Ashley House recognizes being a part of the medical community, we have responsibilities to advocate and provide the best care by overcoming existing historic, institutional, and systematic barriers. We are committed to advancing equity and fostering a diverse and inclusive community, organization, and culture.

Care from the heart.

Ashley House is a mission driven agency. We do our work because we believe every child deserves to live in an environment that allows him or her to live the best, fullest life possible.

Ashley House was created in 1989 by a small group of like-minded individuals who recognized that there was a gap in services available to medically fragile children and their families. Prior to the creation of Ashley House, medically fragile and complex children stayed in hospitals longer than necessary, resided in adult nursing homes or were placed out of state far away from their families.

When children with severe medical diagnoses leave the hospital, they often still need complex medical care. Ashley House provides transition between hospital and home for children  who require complex care. At Ashley House a child can receive skilled nursing care while the family adjusts and prepares for their child’s homecoming at a much lower cost than if the child stayed in the hospital.

Our goal

The overall goal of the Ashley House program is to help families cope with crisis by providing a warm, caring environment in which they may learn how to meet the demands of their child’s disabilities and illness.

values

Ashley House is driven by what lies at its core.

Professionalism

“The skill, good judgment, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well”. We believe professionalism is the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of preparing yourself for a task, executing the task and interacting with others about the task.

Integrity

Integrity is an uncompromising adherence to values, sincerity, honesty, and candor. It requires us to be convicted in our thinking and consistent in our message and actions.

Team Work

“The interdependent components of performance required to effectively coordinate the performance of multiple individuals” In other words…. “If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Compassion

We believe compassion is more involved than simple empathy and that compassion gives rise to our desire to alleviate suffering. We also believe that it is a key component in what drives us to provide our services. It is one of the characteristics that make Ashley House special.

Holistic Care

Every child that lives at Ashley House is a whole human being and deserves to be treated as such. They are more than a documentation of vital signs and the latest chart note. They are personalities, families, histories, favorite books or songs and their connections to the other kids and staff. Because they are multi-dimensional beings the care we give must be holistic.

Our Acknowledgement

Ashley House acknowledges that we are gathered on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish, Puyallup, Muckleshoot, Stillaguamish, Suquamish, Nisqually, Cowlitz, Saquaxin, Schitsu’umsh, Spokane, Ktunaxa, and the many other Indigenous nations and peoples who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial.

We also pause to recognize and acknowledge the labor upon which our country, state, and institutions are built. This includes the enslaved people who were forcibly brought from Africa and the ongoing contributions of their descendants, as well as the diverse immigrant labor that played a vital role in our nation's development, whether voluntary, involuntary, trafficked, forced, or undocumented, and all unpaid caregiving labor.

To those who contributed this invaluable work and their descendants, we acknowledge your enduring impact on the land where we gather today. It is our shared duty to deeply examine these histories, make amends, and protect and sustain this land. Let us commit to fostering a more inclusive and equitable future for everyone, guided by the principles of justice, respect, and reconciliation.

Testimonial…

"The staff at Ashley house has been extremely supportive and has cared for my son as if he were their own. They were able to ease our fears even while thousands of miles away. Freddie still remembers and talks about the great care and attention he received while at Ashley house."
