World Humanitarian Day
World Humanitarian Day is observed every year on August 19th to honor the brave aid workers who risk their lives to help people in crisis. These are the people providing food, shelter, medical care and protection in war zones, disaster areas and other dangerous situations.
In 2008 the UN created this day to remember the 22 humanitarian workers killed in the 2003 Baghdad bombing, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, a respected UN diplomat.
This is not just about remembrance but also a call to action for individuals, organizations and governments to support humanitarian causes, advocate for the safety of those who serve and stand in solidarity. Humanitarian workers face violence, limited access to vulnerable populations, growing challenges like climate change and sometimes death. This day raises awareness, pushes for better support and reminds us that everyone deserves dignity and help in times of needs.
Each year the day focuses on a theme, this year the theme is Strengthening global solidarity and empowering local communities.
You can help by supporting humanitarian organizations, volunteer or simply spread the word.
